Queensland Sports Aviators

About Us

The Queensland Sports Aviators (QSA) is the Regional Association representing all Sports Aviation Federation of Australia (SAFA) members in the S-QLD region which ranges from the NSW border to the city of Rockhampton. Our Management Committee is a dedicated team of volunteers who share a genuine passion for sport aviation and for strengthening our vibrant S-QLD flying community.

One of our core responsibilities is managing the Regional Development Levies (RDLs) that every SAFA member pays with their annual membership. Since its inception, QSA has maintained the levies at $22 per member — one of the lowest rates in Australia. QSA furthermore ensures that the funds collected from S-QLD pilots are reinvested back to develop and enrich our sport across the region. A substantial portion of these funds goes straight to our local clubs to help them grow, improve facilities, and support their activities (see Clubs).

In addition, in 2025, we additionally developed and implemented the Sports Aviation Grants program to allow all SAFA pilots in our region access to a portion of these funds to help develop the sports in our region. To learn more about the program and past successful projects, take a look at our Grants website.

QSA retains only a small operating budget to cover our administration costs, ensuring that the vast majority of RDLs goes directly back into the community and into the future of sports aviation in our region.

Note that all QSA committee members are unpaid volunteers and do not benefit from their position in any way.

Our activities include:

Setting the amount of the Regional Development Levy (RDLs), collected annually by SAFA and passed on to QSA

Distributing the RDLs to S-QLD SAFA members and clubs to maximally benefit the sport in our region

Representing our aviation interests with key State and Regional stakeholders

Supporting safety programs for our pilots

Supporting our clubs and their members

Supporting our training schools throughout our area of operation

Promoting our unique aviation forms to the broader Queensland public

Encouraging Queenslanders to engage with our training schools & enjoy an exhilarating aviation experience

Supporting the Sports Aviation Federation of Australia (SAFA) and its governance of our aviation forms

Supporting the efforts of our clubs to grow our sport

Working with organisations to secure funding that supports the growth of our sport

QSA Survey (June 2025)

In 2025, QSA invited all SAFA members in the region (S-QLD) to participate in a survey to gather feedback on how Regional Development Levies (currently $22 / year) should be spent.

The survey sought members’ views on QSA’s current initiatives, including support for the Sports Aviation Grants program and funding provided to clubs across the region. Members were also invited to provide feedback about what they cherished most about their clubs, identify areas for improvement, indicate which flying sites they use most frequently, and share their views on a range of other topics relevant to flying in our region.

SAFA members clearly supported our current initiatives of splitting the Regional Development Levies between Sports Aviation Grants and the clubs in our region.

A short summary of the survey results is available below. For the full report, please contact president@qsa.asn.au.
